The actual biggest AI story in this country is happening in a shed in Sydney

Australia is spending $268 to 368 billion on AUKUS which is nuclear-powered, human-crewed submarines. It’s the most expensive defense program in this country’s history and Australia is joining the 6 countries on Earth that have nuclear subs

But guess what we are ALSO building: Ghost Sharks. I have completely spiraled into the world of AI subs and you don’t have a choice but to join me into madness

Defence company Anduril build long-range, AI-powered, un-crewed submarines and as part of a $1.7B program with the Australian Navy - there is a 80,000 sq ft factory in Sydney

so 👏 why 👏 is 👏 no 👏 one 👏 talking 👏 about 👏 it 👏

Ghost Sharks / AI subs 101:

• Dive to 6,000 meters and loiter for 10 days straight

• Run the whole mission alone, navigating and assessing threats

• No autonomous weapons release authority yet

• Built for the boring, dangerous, repetitive grind: surveillance, mapping, tracking

• Cheap enough to build dozens and lose one without losing human life

Nuclear subs 101:

• Diesel-electric has to keep surfacing to recharge, so it can’t stay under for months

• Can’t keep pace with a Chinese navy that’s scaled faster than anyone predicted

• Exist for deterrence and strike aka roles that require a human making the call in ambiguous, high-stakes moments

Can I tell you the craziest thing of all? Ghost sharks are square…. Are Anduril engineers Minecraft nerds?
