God creates dinosaurs. God destroys dinosaurs. God creates man. Man destroys God. Man creates AI... AI eats man. Woman inherits the earth

We’ve spent 2 years asking “Will AI take my job?” but what happens to the economy when it takes everyone’s?

UPS eliminated 48,000 jobs in the largest workforce reduction in its history, with AI cited as a core reason. Amazon cut 30,000 corporate roles. Add Intel, Accenture, Salesforce, and Microsoft: over 100,000 jobs gone in months

I’ve written about AI washing before, and for sure some of this is using AI as a convenient excuse for pandemic over-hiring. But every exec and leader should be paying attention to where this is heading

If your competitor cuts costs with AI and you don’t, you lose on margin. Makes sense. But job cuts mean shrinking your own customer base. Fewer paychecks, less discretionary spend

Who’s actually buying what these “more efficient” companies are selling?

The cost savings show up immediately on your P&L but the lost spending power gets distributed across the whole economy - no one company to feels it acutely enough and no individual CEO is incentivised to solve this

So this lands on governments… and so far, I can’t point to a single policy anywhere in the world that has seriously addressed it

Australia has a National AI Plan with the right words “consultation, transparency, reskilling pathways” and NSW even passed AI workplace legislation this year. But Sydney is already third globally for tech job losses in 2026, behind only Seattle and San Francisco

And anyone with a recent redundancy in this country will tell you that principles don’t pay the rent
